Before You Go

In today’s digital world, protecting yourself online is more important than ever. With cybercrime on the rise, it’s crucial to take the necessary steps to safeguard your devices and personal information from viruses, malware, and other threats. Before taking off for you summer vacation, we have compiled a simple, but effective list of steps you can take to reduce your risk of becoming a victim while traveling.

• Protect yourself before you wreck yourself. Whether it’s your computer, phone, or gaming device, the best way to defend against viruses and malware is by updating to the latest security software, web browser, and operating system. Sign up for automatic updates and shield your devices with anti-virus software. Check out the Phishing Tip Sheet for more info.

• Back it up, buttercup! Backup your contacts, financial data, photos, videos, and other mobile device data to another device or cloud service in case your device gets compromised and you need to reset it to factory settings.

• Keep up to date, mate! Keep your software updated to the latest version. Keep your security settings current and your information safe by turning on automatic updates. Set your security software to run regular scans and stay one step ahead.

• Lock it up, buttercup! Lock your device when you’re not using it. Even if you’re away for just a few minutes, it’s enough time for someone to sneak in and steal or misuse your information. Set your devices to lock after a short time and use a strong PIN or password. Check out the Creating a Password Tip Sheet for more info.

• Double up on protection! Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) to ensure that the only person who has access to your account is you. Use it for email, banking, social media, and any other service that requires logging in. If MFA is an option, enable it by using a trusted mobile device, such as your smartphone, an authenticator app, or a secure token.

Remember, protecting yourself online is serious business, but that doesn’t mean it has to be boring! Stay safe and have fun out there!
